Story
Located in Costa Rica’s Central Valley, El Centro Farm is run by Brumas del Zurquí, which carries on the coffee-growing and processing traditions of two families: the Alvarado family, with four generations of coffee production, and the Gómez Chávez family, with a history spanning more than 100 years.
Today, Natalia Gómez and Juan Ramón Alvarado lead the farm’s efforts to improve coffee quality while caring for the environment. By using organic and natural fertilizers, they nurture healthy soil and protect biodiversity as they produce coffees with distinctive character.
This Typica lot is made from carefully selected, fully ripe cherries with a sugar content of over 20° Brix. The cherries are then slowly dried over 25–35 days using the natural process.

Four Generations of Passion for Coffee
Behind the Costa Rican coffee brand Brumas del Zurquí is producer Juan Ramón Alvarado Rodríguez.
His family has been involved in coffee cultivation for four generations, dating back to around 1880, making them a long-established coffee-producing family in Costa Rica.
In 2012, he won first place at the prestigious Cup of Excellence (COE), one of the world's leading coffee competitions. Since then, he has continued to receive numerous awards, helping lead the way in producing high-quality coffee in Costa Rica.
While valuing the cultivation techniques passed down through generations, he never settles for the status quo. He continues to explore new techniques and environmentally conscious production methods in his pursuit of ever-higher quality.

Quality Over Quantity
For Juan Ramón, the priority is not increasing the harvest, but improving the quality of every single coffee cherry.
From cultivation to processing, every step is carefully managed to bring out the natural character of the land and each coffee variety.
For this Typica lot, he chose the natural process to highlight the variety's distinctive, elegant character, grown in Costa Rica's Central Valley.
An Unforgettable Passion We Discovered at the Farm
When the REC COFFEE team visited the farm, what left the strongest impression was Juan Ramón's passion for continually striving to produce better coffee.
Despite his long history and many achievements, he remains committed to pursuing even higher quality. After tasting the remarkable coffees he produces, we knew we wanted to work with him.
This time, we're introducing a Typica grown in the Central Valley.
And there's more to come: we'll also be bringing you a coffee produced in the Tarrazú region by the same producer.
How will coffees grown by the same producer differ when they come from different regions?
We hope you'll look forward to discovering the next coffee in this series.
