    Story

Located in the highlands of the Bensa district in Ethiopia’s Sidama region, the Dembi #1 processing station collects coffee cherries from surrounding smallholder farmers. Ardent Coffee oversees processing and quality control.

Blessed with a rich natural environment and high-altitude growing conditions, this region produces coffees with distinctive character.

This lot uses the red honey process. After the coffee cherries are depulped, some of the mucilage is left on the beans during drying to help bring out their natural sweetness and fruit character.

    Coffee Information

    Country: Ethiopia
    Region: Dembi, Bensa, Sidama
    Variety: Heirloom
    Altitude: 2,100–2,300 m
    Process: Red Honey

A Note from the Online Shop Manager

Fresh, red-berry-like fruit notes come through from the very first sip.

Alongside that freshness, there’s an elegant sweetness that would pair beautifully with a rich berry tart.

A must-try for anyone who loves Ethiopian coffee!

Even as it cools, its bright, fruity acidity remains enjoyable.

Ardent Coffee Export was founded by Ashenafi Argaw. It has washing stations in major coffee-producing areas in Ethiopia, and handles the processing, processing and export of coffee from small farms.

REC COFFEE began selling Ardent Coffee beans from the 2019-20 crop, two years after the company was founded, and is now the largest purchaser of Ardent coffee in Japan.

We have been working with the founder, Ashenafi, since 2014. Our CEO, Iwase, met him when he was looking for coffee beans to use in the WBC (World Barista Championship). At the time, Ashenafi was working at his previous company, Ninety Plus Coffee, LLC, but later went independent. He contacted me again and our relationship with REC COFFEE began in earnest.

Ashenafi founded Ardent Coffee with his experience and passion from her previous job, her deep knowledge of coffee, and his desire to improve the coffee environment in his native Ethiopia. Although it was only recently established, the company has grown at an astonishing pace, delivering high-quality coffee every year.

They are also actively working to improve the living environment for small-scale farmers by building roads to make it easier for them to commute to washing stations, and by building orphanages and schools. They told us that it is only through relationships of trust with neighboring farmers that high-quality coffee can be produced.

Please enjoy Ardent Coffee, which is made with the efforts of small-scale farmers and washing station workers, as well as Ashenafi's knowledge and passion.
