When should you give midsummer gifts?

The appropriate time to give midsummer gifts varies slightly from region to region.
The period differs by about one month between eastern and western Japan.
Your feelings will be conveyed even more clearly if you give a gift that is tailored to the area of the person who helped you.

Kanto region, Tohoku region

Generally, gifts are given between July 1st and July 15th.

Hokkaido, Tokai region, Kansai region, Chugoku region, Shikoku region

The prizes will be distributed from mid-July to August 15th.

Hokuriku region

In some areas, donations must be made by July 15th, and in other areas, donations must be made by August 15th.

Kyushu region

It is common to give gifts between August 1st and August 15th.

Okinawa

It is given during the Obon period according to the lunar calendar.
*In 2024, it will be from August 16th to August 18th.

Midsummer Gift Etiquette

  • Who should you give it to?

    Give it to someone who has helped you or to whom you want to express your gratitude. Here are some of the most common recipients.
    Parents / Relatives / Boss / Friend / Teacher

  • How much does it cost?

    The general price range is around 3,000 to 5,000 yen. Even for those who have been particularly helpful, the going rate is 3,000 to 10,000 yen.
    Be careful not to give a gift that is too expensive, as it may make the recipient feel uncomfortable.

  • How to write a noshi

    Write "Ochugen" or "Onchugen" on the envelope.
    It is also common to write the sender's full name under the knot of the mizuhiki.

I want to combine my favorite products to create an original gift box.

Depending on the size of the product and the size of the gift box, we can also create original gift combinations.
