About decaf
What is decaf?
This refers to caffeine-free foods and drinks that have had caffeine removed, or that do not contain caffeine in foods that normally contain caffeine (decaffeinated).
There are several methods for decaffeinating coffee, but REC COFFEE's decaffeinated coffee is made using the Swiss Water Process, a process performed by Swiss Water in Vancouver. This is 100% chemical-free and achieves a 99.9% decaffeination rate.
Let's take a look at how the Swiss Water Process removes caffeine.
Green coffee beans (green beans before roasting) originally contain the aroma, flavor, and caffeine of coffee. These green beans are then soaked in water.
2. Special liquid
The aroma, flavor, and caffeine of the coffee beans seep into the water, creating a special liquid. At this point, the aroma, flavor, and caffeine are temporarily removed from the green beans.
Through strict temperature and time management, the green beans are removed from the special liquid at the exact moment that the caffeine has been removed from the green beans.
The special liquid from which the green beans have been removed then moves on to a process using a carbon filter (fine particle filter).By passing it through a specially shaped carbon filter that can only remove caffeine, the special liquid is left with only the caffeine removed while retaining the coffee's aroma and flavor.
The raw beans are then soaked again in the special liquid from which the caffeine has been removed, returning the coffee aroma and flavor dissolved in the special liquid to the raw beans.
The green beans, which have regained their aroma and flavor, are then removed from the special liquid and dried to become decaffeinated coffee beans. They are then roasted like other coffee beans and delivered to you.
